The Importance of Keyword Optimization for Search Engine Ranking

With so many new techniques such as optimizing twitter, canonical URL and other online community promotions, optimizing keyword Meta tags and densities are now being neglected by some webmaster and SEO specialists.

If we will only focus on keyword Meta tags, we may somehow think that it is not anymore important. True, but optimizing keywords in other ways are still vital for search engine promotions.

Keywords are always our basis when we search the net and when we ask a specialist to optimize our sites. These are also what the search engines will tag in displaying the search results.

Optimizing keywords is not only using the right Meta tags for your web pages. Actually, SEO optimization is for keyword promotions because that’s what we want, our keywords to receive page 1 on Google, Yahoo and other search engines. Below are other steps of optimizing keywords:

  1. Keyword Presence at the Node URL
Think of what you think is a very strategic keyword that your possible visitors might search on the net. Include it on your page’s URL. For example, if you are promoting the keyword “ice cream”, rather than using http://www.yoursite.com/node.html, it is better to use http://www.yoursite.com/ice-cream.html.

  2. Strategic Keywords
You can do some experiments with your keywords. However, it is not advisable that you keep on changing your URL if you will apply the first point. That is, your keyword experiments will be for your body contents and Meta tags.

  3. Keyword Presence at the Title Tags or Header Tags
Proceeding the domain name and URL, search engines crawl the title and header tags. Title and header tags in Google algorithm are given importance.

  4. Relevance of Keyword Presence Within the Body Contents
Use the keywords that you are promoting within your body contents. For example, “ice cream”. Use the word instead of using “it”.

  5. Strategic Placing of Keyword as SEO or Cloud Tags
Avoid using your keywords in non-sense sequence just for the sake of “existence.” Some specialists even advice not to use the same keywords many times, this is to prevent spamming and be penalized by search engines.

  6. Text Content For Images & Videos
The presence of keywords in the image URLS, Alt Text and the titleof the image also help in adding the necessary text content to the images which also help in the SEO of the page. If you have videos then placing the strategic keywords in the title of the video and the description of the video will also be an added advantage. With this the possibility of ranking on the images and the videos option of search also increases.

To track the effectiveness of your keywords and not only with the increasing number of visits in your website, you can use tools such as analytics and webmaster tools. Google has both applications that can search track keywords in your site.

  1. The first step to an SEO campaign is to research keywords.  It's important to understand how your target audience is searching.  The next step is to incorporate these keywords into the meta tags and content.  First, write the content for the readers, then incorporate the keywords where you can naturally, but don't go overboard.
