Difference between Linux and Windows Hosting Server

If you just want to set up basic websites and do not need to modify server configurations, choosing the operating system for your hosting is not an issue. Both hosting have default features in setting up basic websites like hosting panel, FTP (File Transfer Protocol), Database, analytics and SMTP (for emails). Some hosting providers are also offering their services with free website builders and other add-ons like store, blog and photo pages.

On the other hand, if you need to set up dynamic websites like those with CMS (Custom Management System) that requires server configuration, you need to choose your operating system wisely.

Linux is very popular among hosting services. Many find Linux faster and can handle higher traffics than Windows. It is also cheaper because it is an open source platform and it supports all open source applications that are normally available for free. Linux is also more secured and has a stable environment.

Languages Commonly Supported by Linux Hosting:

  1. Php

  2. Java

  3. Ruby

  4. ASP

  10. jQuery

On the other hand, if you need to use Windows or Microsoft based technologies, might as well choose Windows hosting. Unlike Linux, some hosting providers are offering Windows in a higher price because most Windows or Microsoft based applications are not for free. For the reason that Windows based technologies are commercialized, you can manipulate the applications in a more user-friendly platform with supports available 24/7. To be fair, although not all, Windows is also supporting some open source languages like Php and msql.

  1. I think that in most of the cases, the hosting providers provide two well-known operating systems with the server, namely, Windows and Linux. Linux servers and Windows servers are two most well-liked for a variety of reasons.
