We can connect our devices to the internet via telephone cable or via airborne connection. It depends on the needs and even budget of the entity of why they are using telephone cable or wireless. Some individuals prefer cable connection at home and wireless on the outdoor. Depending of course of the provided bandwidth, phone cable connections are usually faster and uninterrupted than airborne. Hence, the inconvenience of setting up cable, plug switches and station location makes others to choose wireless rather than cable connections.
We know that wireless connection is far more convenient and portable than cable. As long as atleast one type of airborne signal like HSDPA, 3G, GPRS or GSM is at present, you can already reach the world via the internet. We also cannot neglect the fast growing emergence of the industry of wireless internet connections.
There are currently 2 famous wireless connections, the WiFi and the WiMax. Most users might not care whether they are using a WiFi or a WiMax, as long as they can surf well. Some even think that there is only one wireless connection and it is called WiFi. Hence, if you care about the consistency and speed of your internet connection, you might want to know whether your internet provider is using WiFi or WiMax.
WiFi is the standard wireless connection, reason why most of us when buying a device normally ask if it is WiFi ready, not knowing the existence of WiMax. Few may conclude that WiMax is the enhanced version of WiFi. This is somewhat true.
WiMax signal can reach farther than WiFi. You can also connect easier in WiMax even with some trees, blocks or walls around you. Hence, more people are using WiFi WiMax because it is cheaper and already widely use, so we say it is the wireless standard.
WiFi has been largely implemented to provide cheap wireless connection. Other than cable, it is the typical connection in setting up LAN (Local Area Connection) among a specific network so the user can connect wirelessly. WiFi has proven successful wireless internet connection in several entities at cheaper prices like home, office, cafes and other small service areas.
On the other hand, WiMax was created to provide last mile or larger distance connections for homes, businesses and other entities. WiMax is more expensive than WiFi but can provide a more stable, faster speed and can provide wide area access. It uses transmitter to carry signal and does not require line of sight between the user and the signal provider. That is, as described earlier, WiMax can provide connection even within offices inside a building or even to a house located a few miles far. WiMax is practical and cost effective if the network wants to provide wireless internet connection in rural places or any farther locations.
WiMax has also proven better quality connection than WiFi. As more users are connected in WiFi, each competes to gain consistent bandwidth while WiMax secures consistent level of broadband bandwidth to every user. WiMax has a set number of users, if it reaches the limit number of connections, it will transfer other users to a new WiMax server.
WiMax is not yet widely implemented but if one of these days it reached further places, we may say that is the future of wireless connections as prices can also be cheaper.
