Link Baiting: The Do’s and The Don’ts

Link bait marketing is a strategy in which online marketers use text, audio and video clips to attract visitors. This media usually contains a button in which when clicked, would direct you to another webpage. With this type of marketing strategy, there would be a high volume of web visitors that are directed to your website.

However, you will first need to get the visitors’ attention first.  Afterwards, you can get them to read and click the button on the page, and then they would be directed to your actual page where you will be posting products, items and services.

An important key for Link bait to work is get web-users attention; you will need to attract their attention to achieve an audience that will be linking to another website. This is why content must be made interesting and appealing to the visitors. Others would even offer raffles or rewards to the visitors who will click the button on their ad page. This makes this marketing strategy very viral – which is why almost all online businesses are using link baiting.

Among the different types of online marketing methods, link baiting has the most interesting methods. A good link bait will receive positive attention and will result to an increased traffic to your website.  Hence, if you are creating a PPV or PPC website, this is a very good marketing strategy for you.

Here are things to do to create your own successful and effective link bait campaigns.

1. Do research and statistics on popular topics. Finding a popular topic that has yet to be discovered can prove to be challenging, but at the same time, if you’re successful with finding one, it can also prove very helpful in link baiting visitors. For example, your website is promoting slimming products, so you research a topic about certain celebrities slimming routine, getting the attention of visitors who are conscious with their weights or individuals who are overweight.

You also need to base your information on actual facts.  Otherwise, visitors might get the impression that you are just making everything up.

2. Provide instruction. Giving the visitors the guide of the “HOW” may also prove very useful in your link bait campaign. This gives the visitors the idea that not only is it informative; they can also get something out of it for free. Providing short and concise instruction is very effective.

You need to provide detail instruction on how to deal or to do things. A guide on how to increase ranking on your website would likely catch the attention of website owners.  If your guide is an instruction on how to do SEO and it is shared with a link providing SEO services, this will result to an increase in traffic to your link, and at the same time, this may result to a sale.

3.Give rewards. This is one of the most effective ways of link baiting; people are more attracted when they can get something for free. It can be in a form of a contest; such as visitors need to answer certain questions and they get a reward if they get a perfect score. Or the first 1,000 person to click the link gets to join raffles with a jackpot prize.

Prizes may also range from free website subscription or free tickets to the movies or the games or it can be in the form of money. Either way you get their attention, and that would increase traffic towards your link.

Here are some things to avoid when creating your own link baits.

1 . Putting too much content on the page. If you put too much content on your page, it would result as unappealing and boring, thus making it hard to share a link of your page. A page that talks about a lot of things such as “How to make a nice dress” about finding the right piece of cloth combined with the right color and using the right beads and tassels and choosing the best tailor, may prove boring rather than informative.

You need to keep the content simple and understandable. Avoid using a lot of technical terms, which might confuse your reader, so if the reader cannot understand it, why bother sharing the link?

2. Overusing of social networking sites. This is one of the misconceptions in link baiting on social networks. Most SEOs think that if they post ads on social networks it would result to increase in traffic to the link. Though in some cases it might prove useful, but on most cases social network users don’t bother to click any links that are posted on the social sites.

This is due to the fact that social network members are more interested in chatting with their friends or checking out pictures of other friends, rather than checking out your links. Be cautious and picky on choosing the right social network and social bookmarking sites – it may make or break the deal.

3. Not spreading your Link bait campaign. This means that you are not using all options to increase awareness of your link bait page. For example: you might have an incredible page but your page can only be seen in WebPages that sell cars, or pages for new gadgets. You failed to distribute your page to all media’s such as social networking pages or adult website. If you fail to do so then you will experience a low volume of traffic being linked to your page.

If you can, try to follow these tips.  Remember that the main purpose of link baiting is to get people to check out your website. You combine link baiting with a very good website, a company that offers quality and honest services, and you can expect a significant increase in profits.  It’s as simple as that.
