Hi Guys this is Wasim from Alrayes Web Solutions. In today’s episode I’m gonna go over some points on how to choose the right designer and the right developer for your project, whether it’s a website project or a mobile application project or just a general design project for a business card or a leaflet.

Overall, it’s crucial that you choose the right company to work with because a project can last couple of weeks, couple of months, or even couple of years. So you’re gonna be working with this individual or with this firm for a long period of time. So overall, it’s important that you choose the right company to work with. And it’s crucial for you as a business owner that you invest in a company or a person that can actually deliver the project according to your requirements, according to your expectations, and of course, also to how you want your website to be built or your application to be built.

So first things first, when you do a search for a designer or developer online, you come on the website, the first thing you look out for is the portfolio. Having a look at the portfolio gives you an idea of what work they’ve done already, also gives you an idea of what quality of work that you’d expect for your project and is it according to your standard? Is it something that you would be happy with? If this designer was to do your project for you or this developer is to do your project for you and deliver your project, would you be happy with the work? So by having a look at the portfolio, it gives you an idea of, “Yes, this is the type of work that I am looking for” or “No, this is not the type of work that I am looking for.” So you can then decide whether to go forward in the search for the right designer or right developer. Also, it gives you an idea of how consistent they are in the project. Is it just that one project that they deliver and the next couple of one’s is not according to scratch. So having a look at the portfolio gives you a full idea of what sort of work they can do, what sort of work that you can expect and whether you are happy, whether you will be happy with their work. Also, if you come to find that they haven’t gotten their portfolio, then you need to ask yourself a question, “Why don’t they have a portfolio?” Is it something that they are hiding? Is it something that they’re ashamed of? Or if it’s a new company, that they haven’t got enough work to showcase, then you need you need to ask yourself a question, you know, would this company have the expertise and also the experience in delivering the work that you want to be delivered. So, portfolio is extremely important and something that you can’t afford to miss.

Once you have done away with the portfolio, then we move on to the next step which is reviews. Now reviews plays a major part in the success of a project and in choosing the right designer or developer for your organization or for your project. Now, don’t just go in a company’s website and have a look at the reviews, because overall you’re dealing with designers, you’re dealing with developers. They can put anything they want in their company’s website. What you want to do is look for reviews outside of the company’s website. Look on directories, look online, look on blogs, on forums. If they’ve been established for a while, they would have people talking about them outside their website. So that’s what you want. You want firsthand experience of people that have actually dealt with these individual or dealt with this company and what they thought. Could they deliver the project according to their expectation? Are these people happy? Because the portfolio might be good and the portfolio might look excellent to you but then, are people really happy with their work? You know, is it the work that was assigned to them, was it delivered on time? Was it delivered according to expectations? All this be achieved by looking at reviews. Something that you can’t afford to miss. If you can’t find any reviews then I would say, don’t go any further; look for another designer, look for another developer. And if you still want to work with them, and you can’t find any reviews outside their website, what you do is that you’ve established that they’ve got a good portfolio, contact their existing customers. Pick up the phone or send them an email saying that, I’m looking to deal with so-and-so company and I’ve seen that they’ve done this much work for you or they’ve delivered your website or done your printing or they do your SEO or the marketing. Whatever work it is, ask them, are they happy with the work? What feedback can they give? And by you having first-hand experience of or from the existing customers, it’ll give you an idea of, yes I can deal with this company, I would like to work with this company. I would like to work with this company. So portfolio and reviews are something, the two points that you can’t afford to miss when choosing a designer and developer. I do this all the time when choosing a designer and developer for my project, for my team. That I look at the portfolio, I look at their past history, I contact their previous employers. So you as a business owner, you need to do the same thing. At the end of the day, you’re hiring somebody; you’re hiring a firm for your project.

So after you’ve established the portfolio, and you’ve established that yes, they’ve got good track history, people are happy about them, what you need to look at is how active they are. Not just how active they are online, but also, what I mean is, if they’ve got a blog, how frequently do they update their blog? If they’ve got a social media account, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and any other social media platform that they own, how frequently do they update those posts or update their status? Because I’ve come across many designers, many developers, even individual and firms that they’ve got blogs, they’ve got Google+ accounts, they’ve got Twitter accounts, but they’re just dormant. There’s no one updating those accounts, there’s no consistency. So, is this a company that you want to be dealing with? Ideally, if they are web designers, web developers and they’re active on their own platform, they’d be active on your platform. Also, it gives you an idea of what sort of knowledge they have, because if they would be updating regularly on the blog, you can read the articles and see what other people are saying about those articles. Are they useful to their customers? Are they useful to their audience? Look into their Twitter account; see how many people are following them, not just how many people are following them, but see who’s following them and who they are following. And also, who are they basically? Overall who are they engaging with? And then if they are in Facebook, see how many people are talking about them, what sort of posts or updates are they putting out on a frequent basis? All these can be looked at; all these are what I mean by how active they are online.

Now, so you’ve seen the portfolio, you’ve seen the reviews and you’ve seen how active they are. If they’re active, then it means that yes, the company’s live, they’ve got employees, and are happy about them, and that can deliver your project according to your requirements.

Before we sign the dotted line, and before you say: yes, this is the company that I want to be working with. By this stage, by point number four, you should have a shortlist of at least three to five companies that you want to be working with. So the next few steps is basically, choosing the right one that you can work with. So what you want to do is, the fourth point is communication. What I mean by communication is what sort of communication you can have with this individual or with this company? Some companies that I see online or on the web, they don’t have any communication. They have a portal. You submit your project. And then, after couple of weeks or couple of days, you get your project delivered. There’s no communication involved; is what you submit and is what you get out. Now, ideally, communication plays a major part in the success of a project. It can actually break or make a project. So, when I mean communication, it does not mean you have to go out there and have a face to face meeting with them. It could mean a Skype call, it could mean a conference call, it could even mean a five minute phone call. Or even just general email updates. Right before you choose the right designer, the right developer, ask them, are they happy to have regular communication with you? Are they happy to go in Skype with you, maybe once a week or once a month? Are they happy to have a face to face meeting maybe with you every six months depending on how big the project is? Communication plays a major part. And if the company is not willing to have, no communication with you, then I say, start again and look for another company that you can work with. Because communication is the key to success, in delivering a website and also delivering a mobile application or in just general design. Because, that way, you can make sure that the project is being worked on according to your requirements if the designer and developer is also on the right track. You might give them something, you might give them all the literature, all the project brief and all the details about the project. And then they go away and they work on the project and then you don’t know if the project is being done right, if they’re been any mistakes. All this can be established if you have regular communication because if let’s say that the project is a month long, maybe you can have two sorts of meeting. You can have initially, face to face meeting to make sure that the designer and developer understands your requirements and then they can deliver according to your expectations. Secondly, is maybe after a couple of weeks, we can have a Skype conversation just to see where they are in the project, and if it’s been delivered or if it’s being worked on according to how you’ve briefed them, and how they’ve thought that everything’s to be worked on. So, communication is something that you can’t afford to miss. And once you’ve established all that, is before we sign the dotted line, is you wanna make sure you have a good working relationship with them. You know, the project can last a couple of weeks, couple of months, and as I said, some projects last couple of years. You wanna have a good healthy working relationship with them in terms of that you can speak with them when you like; you can pick up the phone, and they’re there to help you for any queries and then, overall if you want to go out  for a cup of coffee with them, they should be able to say yes. You know, come to the office, come and have coffee with us, see what’s happening about your project. Overall, you’re working as a team, when you hire a designer or when you hire a developer, it’s one team. They’re gonna be working with your company or with your project, so they deliver according to your expectation.

So, if you can keep these five points in mind, first thing’s portfolio, extremely important, you can’t do without it. Secondly, to go out online and search for what other people are saying about them. And then see how active they are online. Whether it’s on their own website, whether it’s on blogs, forums and social media. And then make sure you can have good communication with them. You know, whether it’s through email, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, you know, any sort of communication, you should be able to have with them. And then lastly, make sure that you can, is the company you can work with, you can engage with and you’d be happy to work with them for the next couple of months. And maybe in the future, if you’ve got other web projects or mobile applications, you can assign it to this company because you’ve got a good healthy relationship with them from previous experience.

Now, if you keep these five points in mind, I’m sure that you will find a designer or developer that will be suitable for your project and I do wish you all the best with your project.
